Umbrellas deserve better
In the 70s, umbrella stands began to resemble bins. They’ve been haunted
by this brutal intervention ever since. Perhaps we could label it an
‘endangered typology’ of complimentary furniture in need of a touch of colour
The plan: Gather discarded material from the streets of Barcelona.
Manipulate this scrap to create one umbrella stand prototype a day (for two
weeks). Pick an interesting result and translate it into a dignified concept
suitable for small-batch, artisanal production.
Designed with nods to its origins in scrap, FUNNEL is an unfamiliar umbrella
stand which celebrates the diversity and magic of craft. Happy to stand with
and without an umbrella in place. Wheel thrown ceramic base, hand-lathed
steel body and blown glass features.
